New Beginnings

With any new beginning— whether a hobby, job, relationship, or latest purchase— there is a honeymoon period. Life becomes very exciting, we feel more ambitious than ever, and all is good in the world. The sparks eventually sizzle out as things become routine and more predictable. Feeling bored, disappointed, or unmotivated, our minds suddenly turn on autopilot and then we dream of the next new thing to pursue.

I’ll admit that I have made a habit of starting and abandoning quite a few projects through the years. My justification was that I never felt defined by my work, so it was always easy to detach. I am not trying to make my past self wrong for being this way. It is simply an approach that no longer serves me.

While change can broaden our horizons, there is even more value in contentment and a renewed sense of interest/curiosity for what we already have or know. There is always room for more exploration and growth. We can still find joy here.

How do we practice contentment when the world is filled with such endless possibilities and opportunities?

Engaging with the moment as it unfolds helps us become more playful and receptive. Slowing down gives us the bandwidth to question, explore, and experiment. Through these simple actions, we become less judgmental, less harsh on ourselves and others, less tempted by new things, and more appreciative of what we already have.

This is precisely how I wish to approach this new blog, Poise & Purpose. Much like keeping a journal, maintaining a blog requires a level of commitment— one that I promise to continuously come back to again and again.

Some days, the words will flow effortlessly. Other days, it will feel much like trying to unclog a drain. I will approach each new post with a sense of playfulness. I will acknowledge any negative thoughts or feelings. I will try to remain fully present. I will forgive myself. I will let things be as they are.

In order to cultivate Poise and Purpose, we must experience calm contentedness and live each day as though it is a gift. I am ready to share my blog with the world. And I hope it will be of some value to you.
